Horses are wonderful people. I have been riding horses since I was 6 years old and got my first horse when I was 10. I did barrel racing until I was about 19. Then came college and working and no time for horses. I knew one day I would have a horse again. But I never dreamed it would be a horse like Harley, or that I'd find such a gifted trainer, or learn just how much I didn't know. Funny how life works out. I just knew I needed to get another horse before I was too old to get into the saddle.

This is the story of Harley.

Chapter Seventeen - The Benefits of Time Off

After not having been able to ride Harley much for several weeks, I was surprised and delighted to find that, not only did he remember our "leg to hand" accomplishment from November, he is now taking and keeping contact almost continuously during our workouts.  And, for the first time ever (drum roll)....Harley is keeping contact through walk to trot transitions!!  He appears to be one of those horses who truly benefits from time off between workouts, perhaps it allows him to digest what he has learned, and prevents him from becoming overwhelmed or "burned out" from too many new things at once.

Keeping contact is difficult for him to do, and I am so very proud of him.  He seems to have crossed over to a point where contact seems right to him, not something to avoid, and not something scary either.  We will continue to take our time increasing his flexibility, strength, extension and balance.  Now, if I could only keep my hands high enough and my eyes up, we'll be in good shape  =)
